Create a Discord Bot – With AI & Without Coding (2026)

Deutsche Version

You want your own Discord bot but can't code? That works. You can't skip the basics, though: every bot of your own needs an app in the Discord Developer Portal, a token, and a computer it runs on.

This guide covers the three realistic routes, the steps in the Developer Portal, and where AI actually helps.

Three ways to your own bot

RouteCoding needed?What you do yourself
Invite a public botNoInvite it and configure it in the provider's dashboard. Not your own bot, not your own code.
Use ready-made bot codeNo, only configurationCreate the app, put the token in .env, start the bot on a server
Build it with AIA little, but you must read the codeAs above, plus have the AI generate code, review and adapt it

If an existing bot does the job, just invite it. Once you want your own commands, your own data or full control, you need your own app.

Step 1: Create the app in the Developer Portal

According to the Discord docs, every bot starts as an app:

  1. In the Developer Portal, click Create App, enter a name, press Create.
  2. The General Information page shows your Application ID.
  3. New apps have a bot user enabled by default. You configure it on the Bot page.

Step 2: Generate the token and keep it secret

On the Bot page under Token, click Reset Token. Discord won't show the token again unless you regenerate it; the docs suggest keeping it somewhere like a password manager.

The token is your bot's password. It belongs in the .env file, never in a chat, a public repository or an AI prompt.

Step 3: Turn on intents (only if needed)

Intents determine which events Discord sends your bot. Privileged intents, such as message content, are toggled on the Bot page. Per the Gateway docs, verified apps (required for apps in 100+ servers) must also have these intents approved.

Your bot code's instructions tell you which intents it needs. Turn on only those.

Step 4: Invite the bot to your server

  1. Open the Installation page.
  2. Under Default Install Settings, for Guild Install, add the applications.commands and bot scopes.
  3. Selecting bot shows a permissions menu. Pick only the permissions the bot really needs.
  4. Under Install Link, choose "Discord Provided Link", open the link and select your server.

Step 5: Start the bot and keep it online

Your own bot is a program. It's only online while the computer that started it is running, so for 24/7 operation you'll usually use a small server (VPS). Many ready-made bots ship with a Dockerfile to simplify starting them.

Creating a Discord bot with AI: what's realistic

AI assistants can write bot code, explain error messages and add commands. To make that work:

  • Start from a working base, not an empty file. The AI then adds a command instead of inventing everything.
  • Ask for one command per request, e.g. "Add a /rules slash command that posts the server rules as an embed".
  • Read the code before you run it. Make sure the token is only read from .env.
  • Never give the AI your token. A placeholder is enough.
  • Try it on a test server first, before the bot joins your real server.

The full code route is in our guide Discord-Bot programmieren mit discord.js v14 (in German).

Use ready-made bot code

Instead of starting from zero, you can buy code and only configure it. On Botnexio (prices incl. VAT, delivered as a ZIP, hosting not included):

  • Discord Bot Starter (discord.js v14), €19: slash-command loader, /ping, /help, /poll, logging and a Dockerfile. A good base to extend with AI.
  • Anti-Scam Bot, €25: detects phishing links and fake Nitro, deletes them and writes to a mod log. Detection is heuristic and can miss new scams.

FAQ

Can you create a Discord bot without coding?
Yes, with ready-made bot code: create the app in the Developer Portal, put the token in .env and start the bot. You don't need to code, but you do need a computer or server for it to run on.

Is running your own Discord bot free?
Expect ongoing costs for the server that runs the bot around the clock, and possibly a one-time cost for ready-made code. Discord's guide to creating the app mentions no fee.

Can ChatGPT or another AI write my Discord bot?
AI can generate code and explain errors. Review the code yourself, try it on a test server first, and never give the AI your bot token.

What do I do if my token was leaked?
On the Bot page in the Developer Portal, use Reset Token right away to generate a new one, and put it in your .env.

Why is my bot offline?
Your own bot is only online while its program is running. If you shut down the computer or the program crashes, it goes offline. A small server is the usual fix for 24/7 operation.
